How Learning & Development uses AI Tools

When ChatGPT entered our world in November of 2022, many educational institutions and organizations were skeptical, focusing on policies to block the use of AI language. Gradually, though, ChatGPT has transitioned from foe to friend as we recognize both the opportunities and limitations of AI language and image tools. Many organizations are specifically looking for people willing to learn and adapt to new technologies and experiment with how to leverage them. However, it’s not just the ability to use these tools–it’s what you can do with them. Let’s explore the possibilities by considering ways that training professionals are using AI:

Brainstorm. We can use generative AI to develop ideas for training programs or content for e-learning quickly. For example, ask ChatGPT for suggestions on training topics based on the pre-identified needs of a particular department or role.

Support data analysis. AI can help with data analysis, evaluate learner feedback, and identify improvement areas. AI can also help you write reports. For example, you can use AI to analyze participant feedback and make suggestions for course revision.

Write your Meeting Minutes. AI tools can analyze audio, written transcripts, and video recordings to summarize and identify essential components.

Intelligent Tutor. AI chatbots can help you understand complex information in text by summarizing and identifying main points. You can converse with your bot by asking questions and requesting information and clarification.

Create case studies, role plays, and scenarios. ChatGPT can help you develop scenarios and stories for training and e-learning. Describe the situation and problems you want to address in your scenario and ask ChatGPT to write a case study or scenario.

Generate tests. With text, audio, or video content, AI tools can generate test questions in various difficulty levels.

Create training videos. AI video creation tools use avatars or text-to-animation features to quickly and economically create training videos.

Generate images. By now, you’ve probably heard of DALL-E, an AI tool that can quickly create images based on the information provided. While it takes a lot of trial and error to get what you want, DALL-E can generate images and diagrams that support training materials. ChatGPT can help you with image prompts. To the left is an example of a DALL-E-generated image with help from ChatGPT for this post.

Provide Feedback. Whether writing objectives or designing instruction, ChatGPT is an effective first reader. Try entering a rough draft and your criteria and ask for ideas for improvement.

The top execs in my organization has started to implement ChatGBT when they are internally emailing. They said this approach makes it easier for them to send emails in a faster and effective way. The disadvantage of using this could be the lack of compassion it may generate (if someone is emotional, they may get offended by the ChatGBT’s direct response).

I think there has been a lot of fear about Chat GPT especially when it comes to learning. It seems people first think of it as a way to cheat. I have personally found Chat GPT helpful in many ways. Helping write better learning objectives, using it as a means to brainstorm, assisting in interview preparation, helping me to better understand complex topics, identifying examples etc…. I think the frame of reference we need to use when thinking about Chap GPT is LIFE TUTOR. Not asking Chat GPT to do but HOW TO DO is a huge game changer when it comes to learning transfer and self directed learning on demand. It’s an extremely amazing development in learning and based on the above I have only scratched the surface of its capabilities.

I agree, it’s great for learning objectives. I still have to revise them but it does offer a starting point. It can help with letter writing but I think we have to be careful not to put out 100% AI text when the stakes are high, like in a cover letter. I like asking it for advice on my writing. I’ll enter a document that I think sounds good and ask how I could improve it and I usually get some helpful suggestsion. It’s been helpful for me to think of it in terms of extended mind theory: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_mind_thesis

I’d say the advantages of AI languages like ChatGPT include quick idea development, data analysis aid, and assistance with other training-related activities. However, there may be limits due to the necessity for precise input creating and potential biases in answers.

Currently and in the past, I have used ChatGPT personally to create workouts plan for liftin weights throughout the week actually just to test out the new platform that has cultivated many people.

Personally, the use of AI is still fairly new to me. However, based on this article I see that there are many positive ways in which AI can be helpful. One of the listed ideas I liked is using AI to write meeting minutes. In my current job, it is sometimes hard to take meeting minutes and keep up with typing as fast as people speak. Having an AI tools that can analyze audio and video to summarize and identify essential components would be very helpful!

AI is the future. Higher education needs to start adapting to this idea since it is coming into our classrooms faster than we were expecting. I am all for a use of it in a way where students are learning and allowing the AI to help them initiate the ideas or support their arguments.

One area where it is very handy is marketing. With a few click, social media marketing can be completed and posted. In addition, in today’s tech age, AI can help in healthcare with diagnosing diseases, analyzing medical images, and predicting patient outcomes. AI can enhance safety and security by analyzing data to identify potential risks, detect anomalies, and prevent cyberattacks, etc.

This tool can be very useful but there need to be some regulations in place.

Personally, I believe that AI is here to stay, and we need to learn to work with it effectively. It’s another tool in our arsenal, and as professionals, it’s crucial to utilize all available resources to ensure effective development and success for our companies. However, it’s also important to be aware of potential challenges, such as over-reliance on technology and ensuring that AI implementation does not compromise the human quality of learning and interaction.

“AI, as the name suggests, stands for artificial intelligence and needs to be properly evaluated by its owner using real intelligence after its application. When AI first emerged, I found it intimidating, as it seemed to take away the originality of many things. Prose could be altered, a musician’s voice could be replicated, and even at a drive-thru, your orders are taken by a ‘voice.’

As the initial dust settled, I realized that AI is here to stay. I began to see how it makes work easier, helping us explore new and simpler ways of analysis and grammar correction. Now, I’m trying to embrace its potential. While AI may know so many things, empathy, love, and the warmth of a person are irreplaceable. I wonder if the new robots can do that too!”

As a college writing teacher, I worry that students cut themselves off from opportunities to learn critical thinking skills when they use AI in writing tasks.

However, at the moment, I’m less concerned about the ethical problems with Gen AI than I am with the Dall-E image in the blog post…..an up-close look at it reveals lots of weirdness, especially with its representation of text (it’s not English, or any other language that I’m familiar with), and the women’s hands are quite strange looking. I know that this is a problem when AI creates images that are supposed to be realistic (the hands often lack fingers or have too many, or there are figures with three hands….), but I’m surprised to see such problems in a stylized image where accurate detail shouldn’t be super important.

I’m not sure when the image was created, but if it was a couple of years ago, I suspect that the technology has gotten better.

Pros and Cons of Chat GPT:

Cons: ChatGPT may present a lack of personalization and original thought. Most times you can tell if something sounds rehearsed and not original.

Pros: ChatGPT can help with simplifying your thoughts on paper as long as you provide realistic information for it to generate a meaningful response.

I have used ChatGPT for already established forms/handouts we use within my office. For instance, when we are trying to generate examples of job descriptions or questions to ask/expect in interviews, the ChatGPT tool is helpful. I would not suggest using it to create a whole resume, instead I would recommend using it to enhance your bullet points when it comes to explaining your impact within a role (what did you do, how did you do it and what were the outcomes/what positive impact you made).

I believe CHAT GPT can be used in a positive way by providing information quickly and drafting content. However, the downsides are that the information could potentially be incorrect or there may be biased information that has been inputted into the system. We must remember that humans are entering this data. I have joined a workgroup to discuss AI’s challenges and benefits.

One clear pro of ChatGPT is the efficiency it brings to tasks like brainstorming, content creation, and data analysis. A limitation, though, is the risk of over-reliance or inaccuracies if users aren’t critically evaluating the outputs. Right now, I am using ChatGPT and other Generative AI platforms in both my studies and professional work as part of TechEd Maven Consulting, where my focus is on building AI literacy for all. I also wrote Experimenting with AI, which explores the ethics behind and practical ways people can learn to work with generative AI more strategically. For me, the goal is to help individuals and organizations use these tools thoughtfully, with both the opportunities and limitations in mind.

I think Gen AI tools like ChatGPT can be utilized to assist with brainstorming and summarizing meeting notes. The limitation is it always needs to be checked and verified because ChatGPT may not produce accurate information. I’m still familiarizing myself with AI and learning how to incorporate it into my professional life. I think of AI as a tool to refine concepts and thoughts.

I think AI and Chat GPT is an awesome tool that has a lot more benefits than negatives. There are cases where Chat GPT gives out wrong information but if you are using it as a basic search engine and not in-depth research, it is an amazing tool.
